Indian Golf Union Tour Edition
UX/UI Design > Individual Project > 1 week
The Indian Golf Union (IGU) is the apex body of golf in India and is responsible for the promotion and development of golf in the country. The IGU hosts and organizes amateur golf tours for Men, Women and Juniors.
The focus of this project was to improve the experience of accessing IGU tournament updates and information for amateur tour players, patrons and fans.
Problem
Currently the IGU only has a website through which it sends all important notifications and tournament updates. Accessing the IGU event information is tedious and inconvenient, especially on a mobile device. The website is not formatted to a mobile phone or tablet which makes navigating the website for information lengthy and confusing.
Solution
I designed a mobile app that would focus on relaying information that players could immediately access. With the website being the parent, with all the possible information the IGU has to offer, the mobile app would provide a quick and efficient way to access information that tour players and fans would want.
Why an App?
Since golfers and players are constantly on the move due to their active lifestyle and traveling, I thought it would be better if the service was provided through a mobile app. That way players and fans would have constant access to their IGU updates and notifications.
Process
I first studied the Current IGU Website and tried to map all their current service offerings and elements.
I worked closely with current IGU Tour player, Rohan Dhole Patil to find out what players would expect from this service platform. With 7 years of IGU Tour playing experience, Rohan is currently India’s #1 ranked amateur and is very familiar with how the IGU events are organized and relay information.
Brainstorming
After identifying all potential stakeholders, I tried to explore ideas of what the app could possibly achieve.
Initially I was exploring the concept of having two browser modes - 1. Verified Tour players, 2. Patrons or Fans
After exploring this concept and mapping how the app would flow I realized that there wasn’t really a need to split the viewer setting.
With Rohan’s help, I short listed the most frequently accessed information by players and fans. We also came to the conclusion that the app should be easy to use with a simple interface to improve navigation through the app and accessibility. This would allow users to access information easily and quickly.
Several tour players had complained that with the current IGU website they were unable to view the entire Merit List on their phones. They would like to easily view live scores and tournament information. Viewing scorecards and lists on the phone were tedious since they were usually in very wide table format and they were unable to pan to view the entire list. With this feedback in mind, I wanted to ensure that detailed information was easy to view on a small device like a mobile phone.
After the first prototype was developed, it was sent to 14 users comprising of current and former IGU tour players, pro golfer, golf coaches, trainers and fans for user testing.
Feedback and User Testing
Not many people noticed that if you clicked on a player’s name in the leaderboard then you could view their entire scorecard. To make this feature more recognizable I included a prompt in the banner of the leaderboard. There were a few design misalignments.
The overall feedback was that the app was easy to use, thus making it effective and efficient.
